The annual South African Sport awards ceremony was held on the 30th November 2006 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The lavish ceremony is televised live on the national TV sports channel.

Willie and Madeleine van Heerden were posthumously awarded the VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR award for 2006.  Their daughter, Wendy Gila, received the award on their behalf.

It is very good to see that the 33 years they spent working for Roller Skating did not go by unnoticed. Roller skating was one of very few of the lesser known sports to be nominated for an award.  Most of the awards went to Rugby, cricket, swimming and athletics.

IT WOULD HAVE BEEN WONDERFUL IF THEY WERE ALIVE TO RECEIVE THEIR AWARD IN PERSON but it is a good feeling to know that they were honored for their dedication to sport.
