Yesterday, the 3rd Youth Olympic Games officially started in Buenos Aires: being the first Olympic Ceremony ever open to the general public, it has been attended by more than 200K people crowding the Plaza de la Republica.

Fireworks and tricks of lights illuminated the most famous Argentinian square so it became the perfect stage for the "Fuerza Bruta" challenging the gravity in a sequence of breathtaking performances.

Addressing the young athletes in his speech, IOC President Thomas Bach said: “To get here, each of you trained and competed hard. You gave your best in the sport you love so much. This is why you deserve to be here, at your Games. Every athlete is different. We all come from different parts of the world and have different cultures. But we are all united by the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect. Guided by these Olympic values, each one of you makes a difference in sport and in life. This experience will stay with you for all your life. We are all assembled here to celebrate you, as the real game-changers.”

And here we are, trying to change the games and make the difference!
Yesterday, during the "Olympism in Action" forum, Leticia Bufoni and Nyjah Huston, as well as Oliver Percovich from Skateistan, showed how skateboarding, thanks to its strong feeling of community, can concretely contribute to change and improve the society in which we live. As stated also by the Mayor of Buenos Aires, Horacio Rodriguez Larreta, the main legacy the YOG can leave to a city is a community healthier and more engaged in the sport: and the change is already affecting the city as you can see so many people on roller and skateboard here in Buenos Aires.

Today it was the turn of the Inline Speed Skaters to testify their passion and their athletism directly in the track. In the morning the 28 athletes run the 1.000mt sprint semifinals to qualify for the finals that took place in the early afternoon.

1.000mt Sprint - Women
The Colombian champion Gabriela Rueda won the first semifinal, in which passed also Nerea Langa - Spain, and Honorine Barrault - France. Kuanchih - Chinese Taipei, was the fastest girl in the track and won the second semifinal passing directly to the final. Thanks to their time, Giorgia Valanzano - Italy, Carolina Ferreira - Portugal, Ashly Marin - Chile and Angelina Otto from Germany passed to the final.
At 2pm, at the presence of the IOC President Thomas Bach and of the World Skate President Sabatino Aracu, the first inline speed skating Olympic final has been run!
In the first laps, the athletes turned in the head to find out the best speed average and to check the rivals' step. At the last lap, Gabriela Rueda started an unstoppable sprint and crossed the finish line first of all, followed by the French Honorine Barrault who overtook the Italian Giorgia Valanzano in the final straight.

1.000mt Sprint - Men
The Korean Jongjin Cheon, the first men in the track during the semifinals, passed to the final. All the athletes involved in the first semifinal passed to the final, as the time reached were the fastest. From the second semifinal, passed to the final only the Colombian Jhony Angulo who crossed the finish line first of all.
On the starting line for the Men 1.000mt Sprint Final: Jongjin Cheon (KOR), Jhony Angulo (COL), Vincenzo Maiorca (ITA), Tao Chen (CHN), Merjin Scheperkamp (NED), Nahuel Schelling (ARG), Gustavo Rodriguez (VEN), David Sarmiento (ECU).
False start for Gustavo Rodriguez but the second gunshot was the good one and the competition started. Korea and Netherlands took the lead in the very first laps. Then it was all between Angulo and Cheon: the Colombian was the first to cross the finish line for a handful of hundredth: close to them, Tao Chen arrived third.

5.000mt Elimination - Women
An amazing competition at top level with all the skaters on the starting line. The peloton was quite close since the very beginning and it made the sprints to avoid the elimination really amazing. Armijos from Ecuador took the lead closely followed by the Colombian Rueda and the first elimination was for Srisathitha - Thainland. It was the turn of Rueda to lead the peloton followed by the Italian Valanzano: the athlete from Netherlands, Van Beijnum, loose the step and had to leave the track at the ring of the bell. The next ones to leave were, respectively, Andrea Lokvencova - Czech Republic, Giselle Stodgale - Australia, Ashly Marin Torres - Chile and Angelina Otto - Germany: the peloton is thinner and thinner whilst Rueda, Armijos, Valanzano, Langa from Spain and Barrault from France stayed close in the lead. The Argentinian girl Fernanda Illanes Cabrera had to leave the track and the following eliminations were for Carolina Ferreira - Portugal and Armijos.
Before the last elimination, Langa took the lead in a sprint, but soon after the first bend Rueda started the final rush: Valanzano eliminated, Langa second, Barrault third.

5.000mt Elimination - Men
The men race was tough and amazing as expected. The Italian Maiorca started leading the peloton since the beginning followed by Foussadier - France, Angulo - Colombia and Schelling - Argentina. The Colombian guy tried to take the lead, but Maiorca came back on the first position. At the last lap, Maiorca started the final sprint and crossed the finish line followed by Angulo and Chang from Chinese Taipei.
