The medieval walls of Vicenza provided a unique backdrop to the 100m drag race at the Speed Skating World Championships.
It's the race that crowns the fastest male and female skaters in the world who have demonstrated the most power, quick reaction time and a winning mindset.
The day unfolded with various qualification rounds and the athletes competed on a straight of two lanes.
In the junior ladies category, fifteen-year-old Sofia Chumiento surprises everyone and clinches the first gold medal of the day.
Faberson Castilla Bonilla from Guatemala confirms he is the fastest skater in the Junior men category.
For Senior Women the final saw the Colombian sprinter racing for the 1st and 2nd place. Geiny Pajaro from Colombia got the gold and Sheila Munoz, silver.
In Senior Men Italy’s Vincenzo Maiorca is the fastest man on skates with an amazing time of 9.70, followed by his teammate Lorenzo Piergigli. An incredibile day for them, as they got through each qualification round with crazy fastest times. The Italian duo raced their earth out in an incredible final, what a show for “le frecce azzurre”!
The Open Marathon will close the 2023 Speed Skating World Championships.
The start will be at 9:00am CET at the Montecchio Duomo.
