WSG Argentina: Artistic, First Gold ever in Senior Couples Dance for Portugal and Tarlazzi and Lucaroni achieve the highest score ever in Pairs

Sunday was an exhilarating record breaking day for Artistic Skating at the 2022 World Skate Games! Adding to the excitement, the host country of Argentina claimed its first Artistic medal of the World Skate Games. 

Couples Free Dance and Pairs Long Programs for Junior and Senior delighted the enthusiastic sold out crowd at America Pavilion. All of the athletes skated with passion and skill in the attempt to show themselves as the best in the world. The key word in both of these disciplines is unison!

In Junior Couples Dance Roberta Sasso and Gherardo Altieri Degrassi of Italy added World Champion Gold Medalist 2022 to an already impressive list of wins for the season. They performed a poignant Free Dance to Slavery and Freedom/Goodbye Song. With quality and a high level they managed 149.91 total points even with two uncommon mistakes from the couple. Lidia Mateo Vazquez and Manuel Delgado Alonso of Spain pulled up from third earning 126.31 total points to capture the Silver Medal. Skating to Golden Fists they performed an intense and strong Free Dance. Andreia Oliveira and Diogo Costa of Portugal, skating to Light Of The Seven, won the Bronze Medal.

With a stacked field, the Free Dance portion of Senior Couples Dance was a highly anticipated event. The top three teams were exquisite and all lending their own unique style to their technically difficult programs with impressive Component scores as well. The brother-sister team of Ana Walgode and Pedro Walgode wrote their names in the history book by winning Portugal’s first ever World Championship Gold Medal in Senior Couples Dance. Their difficulty and fluency were spectacular to the music of The Hours with a total score of 164.63. With their distinct and alluring style, Asya Sofia Testoni and Gianvoanni Piccolantonio of Italy captured the Silver Medal. They scored a total of 152.69 points performing to the music In Her Name. Caterina Artoni and Raoul Allegranti of Italy skated to Blu Cobalto with a reflective quality enveloping the characters. With 148.29 total points they claimed the Bronze Medal.

In the Long Program of Junior Pairs the Gold Medal belonged to Matilde Caputo and Jacopo Campoli of Italy. Coming in ranked number one in the World Skate Rankings, the team now adds their first World Championship title to their list. To the music of Star Wars, Caputo and Campoli earned 166.76 total points with their solid elements. Earning the Silver Medal was Anna Giulia Calabrese and Lorenzo Tommasi of Italy. Skating to the music I Love You/Untold, the team scored 119.09 total points. Milena Azzara and Esteban Alvarez of Argentina delighted their home country audience to capture the Bronze Medal.  Skating to Malabo/Samba Para Olvidar/Gatito they earned 99.55 points.

Senior Pairs Long Program is an event filled with strength, commitment and fearlessness.Highlighting the competition were the top two teams performing all Level 4 lifts. Rebecca Tarlazzi and Luca Lucaroni of Italy brought the crowd to their feet with their inspiring Long Program. To the music of Crystal,, Tarlazzi and Lucaroni achieved a record breaking, highest of all time score of 242.35 total points. Winning their seventh consecutive World Gold Medal they performed an extraordinary program making even the most difficult elements look effortless. Returning 2021 World Silver Medalists Alice Esposito and Federico Rossi of Italy won the Silver Medal with 199.97 total points.  Esposito and Rossi skated with power and tenacity to the music of A Hungarian in Paris/The Storm. It was an Italian sweep with Micol Mills and Tommaso Cortini earning the Bronze Medal. Skating to the music of Tribal Africa, they had 154.13 total points.

Pairs and Couples Dance are events that bring imagination to life. In Couples Dance, stories are told with extreme dedication and incredible technique and difficulty all with continuous movement and partnering. If there were ever an event where skaters could touch the sky, it would be in Pairs. With trust and bravery to accomplish what might seem impossible, the Pairs skaters continue to push the sport with their high flying elements and incredible contact spins. All of the competitors in these events deserve the highest of accolades for their commitment.
