WSG Argentina: Artistic, Gioia Fiori and Lucas Yáñez Pérez triumph in Junior Free Skating

It was a golden night in Junior Free Skating for Ladies and Men at the 2022 World Skate Games. The crowds packed into America Pavilion in anticipation of the incredible Long Programs.

For many Junior athletes it was their first taste of a World Championship. With confidence and preparation the skaters showed they were ready to take on the world. Soaring jumps, difficult and impressive spins, all mixed together with the Components showed the Juniors are a force to be reckoned with.

Gioia Fiori of Italy pulled up from second place to become the World Champion in Junior Ladies Free Skating after her Long Program. In her debut performance at the World Championship, Fiori earned 168.92 total points with a high level of elements. With many difficult variations and positions in her spins, the new World Champion Gold Medalist skated with emotion to the music of He Named Me Malala.  Coming in second place was Sira Bella Gallardo of Spain. To the music of Anne Frank, Gallardo’s skating displayed very good Components while also accomplishing high technical value capturing 164.82 total points. In the tight battle for the Bronze Medal it was Benedetta Altezza of Italy who captured third place. To the music of Tamurriata Mediterrances, Altezza scored 132.68 total points to take her place on the podium.  All three spots on the podium belong to skaters in their first World Championship appearances.

Defending World Champion and World Cup Final Gold Medalist Lucas Yáñez Pérez of Spain now has the 2022 World Champion Gold Medal to add to his collection. The sensational Long Program with eight triple jumps to the music of Matrix was filled with quality and assurance. Scoring a total of 221.35 points, Pérez proved why he is the best Junior Man in the world. Aleix Bou of Spain skating to the music of The Quality of Mercy was a complete package. With magnificent spins and a cultivated style, Bou won the Silver Medal with 190.20 total points. In an incredible comeback was Alex Chimetto of Italy.  The World Cup Final Silver Medalist pulled up from 6th place to win the Bronze Medal. With 158.22 total points he skated to the music of Total War Trailer.

The sport has more than a solid foundation. It has a deep reach into the training and art of what makes skaters successful as displayed by so many wonderful performances in the Junior events.  Now the third World Championship scoring with the Rollart system it is proven that this type of scoring is one of the contributing factors to the rise in the quality of skating.

The new World Champions will not only have Gold Medals, they have also earned top points to kick off this moment in Artistic Skating history. This is the first World Championship where skaters will earn points to set off the rankings for next season which will lead to the Artistic Skating Series 2023.

Friday is the Long Program for Senior Free Skating events.  Don’t miss out on what is sure to be an incredible day of Artistic Skating.  Action starts at 10:30 ART with the top 10 groups starting at 17:00 ART at America Pavilion in Youth Olympic Park.
