Day 3 at the World Championships, and the theatrical display of sporting competition enters the final scenes as the playoff positions were decided in style.  Today each and every team and individual has their final opportunity to set the stage for their playoff positions.  So with every moment counting, let’s have a look at how it stands for the playoffs!

Over in the Junior Men, the French have dominated a tough field, winning 4 of 4 in the opening rounds.  They beat the Argentines convincingly in their only game in the afternoon 7-0 with Romanaz and Yoni scoring two a piece.  Yoni and Monteux both finished the opening rounds leading the French team in goals and points, 4 and 8 each respectively.  The Czech team also came into the tournament with much promise, and with only a loss to France, their position in second place in the A pool is justified.  The Czechs typically have just done enough to progress steadily, even in their close match today v Namibia, Kutchar scoring with 30 seconds left to ease them into their position in the table.  Namibia have played extraordinarily well, representing all of the African continent here at these games, and playing outstandingly considering their stage of international development.  With a record of 2 wins and 2 losses, they are poised for a balanced match in the playoffs vs Italy.  The Italians, in typical fashion completed an epic comeback in their match today v Columbia, who looked to be dominating early with 2 unanswered goals by the second half.  With plenty of whistles in the game, the refs were busy managing the passion on this rink, When Italy came back with something special.  Maserio started the comeback, followed with one by Campulla, and two within the last 5 minutes from Rossetto finished the Colombians off, and placed Italy in a deserved 2nd place in the B pool, right behind an imperious Chinese Taipei.  They have dominated their division, with 4 solid wins, Including today v Brazil with a 5-2 result.  Setting up a battle between the far eastern nations.  Number 18 Cheng You Kuo and 97 Yen Chen Tung, along with 29 Bo Wei Wu all sitting together in the lofty positions of championship points and goals, Cheng particularly with 7 goals leads all players in goals so far, with more to come we are sure! Only the Namibian Keenan Simpson holds more points, and leads the tournament with 12.  As predicted yesterday, the Colombians saw the opportunity to strike against an American team that has so much promise and expectation, but struggled to break out of the lower table, and really play to their potential.  They beat the USA boys 3-1, and come up with a similar record for the preliminary rounds, with Colombian no 80 Pieschacon scoring two of the three.  This means the USA will meet France in tomorrow's quarterfinal, and the Colombians will play Czechia.  Brazil, who beat Colombia on Monday, struggled through the rest of a tough tournament for them.  They played well against the Taipei team and scored two, but after the goal difference is accounted for, they slip below USA, and must battle the host nation to stay off the bottom of the table.  Of course, the host nation is in the early part of its development, so they always knew they had a great hill to climb.  They have one last chance to make the crowds sing out in the playoffs v Brazil, after their fourth defeat today against France.

Over at the Senior Women’s, each match became a crucial device for each team at every level.  Every point mattered from the top of the divisions to the bottom.  And did they ever deliver!  Opening with a very tight game between Canada and Italy.  The Italians must have sensed some vulnerability, and came out again to strike early with 19 Bisi finding the net in under 2 mins.  But team Canada have much to prove and the strength of Toth and Kedra proved too much, and all the results were settled in the first half.  This set up Canada in Second place, only having lost to the first place American side.  Italy ends up in third, with a record of 2 wins from 4.  This lands Canada with a Quarterfinal v Argentina, which will be a tough match, and not at all a forgone conclusion.  The Americans will face Columbia, after having won against their Italy match, and only by 4-3.  Italy beat Mexico 7-1 earlier in the day, and must have felt like they could do something against big guns, which they so nearly did! Ariana Bisi playing a huge role for them in third place in the points table for the championship.  France were forced to work hard against the Argentines in the morning match, conceding 1 to Villagra in the opening seconds.  But the mighty French, like their national anthem commands, march on, march on.  Their second of the day was hotly anticipated to be as tough a match as you could ask for, and it did not disappoint.  Playing against the fabulously talented Spanish side, it was even at 1-1 in a tense match.  Camille for France the only penalty called in the match, it was all out on the rink.  Overtime could not separate them, and only the sheer talent of France number 15, Pauline Bernard could settle the table and result in France going through to the playoff undefeated.  They will play Mexico in the Quarters, who did well to finish in 4th in Pool A, being stacked with world talent such that it is.  Spain will no doubt recover, and should sense that they have a real chance v Italy to progress to the Semi-final, and hope to meet either USA or Columbia.  A match that Team USA talisman Alison Era had predicted, and hoped for.  And a big hand is due to both Brazil and Uruguay, for turning up to these world championships, and facing the raw talent of the best women inline players on the planet.  The experience they hope to have gained will be invaluable when they return to further develop the game in their home countries.  They both have a couple more chances to do their best and play for the 9/10th positions.

The players are in their positions, the pieces are set on the board, and every game, every point, every moment matters now! Hold on to your seats as we enter into the Quarter Finals in the World Championships!  Stay tuned on Worldskategames TV to watch the unmissable action live, and follow on Worldskate.rsportz for every goal, result and live updates.
