On the second day of the Senior Women World Championship, Spain and Argentina are in the pole position of their groups, after beating Portugal (Group A) and Germany (Group B), respectively, in the UPCN Stadium.

The first match of the second day of the competition ended with a clear victory for Chile against the French national team, by 9-1 (6-0 at half-time), with the Chilean team conquering the first three points in this stage.

After a flat start, and having scored the first two goals, Chile took control of the game, against an opponent that was unable to organize itself in the rink. The result allowed the Chilean team to rotate their players, and, in the second half, it was all about time management, with Chile scoring three more times. Celia Gohet scored the sole French goal.

After a tough start against Argentina, the Italian team showed this afternoon, at the UPCN stadium, its offensive strength by beating Colombia 6-1 (4-0 at half-time), in the second match of the day.

Italy began the game with determination and opened the scoreboard with just a minute and a half in the match, with a stunning goal from Erika Ghirardello. The first period was entirely Italian, with three more goals from Francesca Maniero, again Erika Ghiarardello and Elena Tamiozzo.

In the second half, the Italians lowered the pace and played calmly, managing time, holding more ball possession, but didn't stop seeking the goal, with the Colombian goalkeeper being able to stop several attempts by the Squadra Azzurra. Erika Ghiarardello with a powerful shot scored her third in the game and Pamela Lapolla closed the scoreboard for Italy with the sixth goal. Sofia Zuluaga scored the sole goal for Colombia.

For this Tuesday's third match, an excellent hockey game was in store, as you would expect between two very strong national teams such are the reigning world champions and Portugal. After being two goals down at half-time, Spain overcame the Portuguese by 2-3 and are now in first place, in Group A.

Portugal began the Iberian duel with high intensity, with excellent hockey moments, with both teams filling the entire rink with successive attacks counter-attacking moves.

The Portuguese team scored first, at minute 21, in an excellent offensive play, finished by Sofia Moncóvio. After conceding the goal, Spain began to apply more pressure in the match, but the Portuguese team managed to stop the opponent's impetus, with emphasis on the performance of the goalkeeper Cláudia Vicente, who managed to stop the Spanish intentions. The Portuguese team never stopped seeking the goal and, with only three minutes left to the end of the first half, Marlene Sousa scored the 2-0, and set the result at half-time, in what was an excellent first-half from Portugal.

In the second period the Spanish team kept on pressing, with more ball possession and a high pace. Their strategy paid off, as Spain reduced the score at minute 13 and, three minutes later, re-established the tie. Seven minutes before the end, Spain scored again and sealed the victory against Portugal, by the narrowest of margins. Aina Florenza and Sara Roces scored the Spanish goals.

In front of a large crowd, Argentina defeated Germany 8-0 (5-0 at half-time) in the last game of the day for the Senior Women competition. Argentina was superior throughout the whole game, with the Germans creating no difficulties at all.

In the first half, the Argentinians controlled the ball and set the pace. The first goal was scored, at minute 8, by Valentina Fernandez, through a penalty shot. The German approach was only to take advantage of the spaces that were remotely left on the counterattack, while Argentina always showed hunger for more, creating good offensive moves.

In the last 25 minutes, the Argentine monologue continued without any obstacles. Julieta Fernández (4) and Adriana Soto (3) scored the Argentina’s remaining goals.

Concerning the Women Intercontinental Championship games, Brazil and Switzerland thrashed the national teams of Mexico and Australia, 13-0 (6-0 at half-time) and 0-15 (0-11 at half-time) respectively.
