Dear friends, Our 2014 is coming to an end, and it certainly exceeded all our expectations: the first year after the change of the FIRS Statutes that has contributed to the modernization of the structure of our International Federation has demonstrated that the FIRS is now ready to reap...
the fruits of years of hard and professional work.
During the second semester of this year we have received continuing confirmations that the path we are on is the right one: the record turnout of attendings at the Hockey Inline and Artistic Championships, the distribution of the TV signal of the Speed Skating World Championship to TV’s and National Federations, the successful staging of Ladies and B Rink Hockey Championships, as well as the Freestyle, Alpine and Downhill ones, are the clear demonstration of this. And above all, this year has been positively characterized by the presence of Roller Sports in the SportsLab during the Youth Olympics Games in Nanjing, by their inclusion in the FISU’s University Games and by the great success of the Roller Games, that has received two prominent candidatures: Barcelona and Lima!
I am writing to you from Nanjing, where Roller Sports have left their mark: in August we have showcased our sport for 15 days to the decisions makers coming from the Olympic World – IOC members, media outlets and sponsors – and all of them had the chance to appreciate first-hand what we brought. But first and foremost, everything was experienced and appreciated by thousands of kids and youngsters that every day have visited the facilities and tried skating with our Top Athletes. And it all paid off! In Nanjing Roller Skating is been taught in the schools, youngsters and adults meet in the skating rinks to skate together and the city council has immediately started to ride this wave of enthusiasm: everyone is going crazy for Roller Sports!
Of the 4 sports showcased in the SportsLab, Roller Sports have been undoubtedly the most appreciated and this has led the local authorities of Nanjing to contact the FIRS firstly to submit their candidature to host the 2017 Roller Sports, which was unfortunately received over the deadline, and then to sign a memorandum of understanding for the promotion and the long-term development of Roller Sports: it will all begin with a collaboration between the city of Nanjing, the FIRS and the Chinese Federation of Roller Sports for the qualified teaching of Roller Sports, then will continue with the Roller Day in the spring of 2015 and with strong candidatures to host the World Speed Skating Championships in 2016, the World Inline Hockey Championship in 2018 and the Roller Games in 2019. I am proud to say that the FIRS is the only International Federation among those present in Nanjing during the Youth Olympic Games that the authorities wanted to sign that kind of agreement with, recognizing that, among all the sports, it was us the ones who really impressed and attracted the whole citizenship.
To this, we should add the important achievement of having Roller Sports included as a demonstrative sport in the University Games that will be held in Taipei City in 2017 and as an official sport in the 2018 edition: a project that we have been working on since a very long time, whose achievement I am proud to share with all of you. And then there are the Roller Games: after the deadline of October 31, 2014, the two very important candidatures from Lima and Barcelona have confirmed the global interest on this project.
As you can imagine, the upcoming 2015 will be a year of hard work that will start with the FIRS Congress in Rome, where the Roller Games will be finally assigned and modifications will be made to further modernize our International Federation, and will continue with the bidding documents for the different FIRS World Championships that have been implemented this year for the very first time and will allow us to guarantee events of an always higher level.
Obviously, even though we have already won our own Olympics, we will continue to work hard to achieve our Olympic Dream!

Aquí en Nanjing ya hemos ganado nuestros Juegos Olímpicos!
Queridos amigos,
el 2014 está a punto de terminar superando nuestras expectativas: este primer año después del cambio estatutario que ha contribuido a la modernización de la estructura de la Federación, ha demostrado que la FIRS está lista para recoger los frutos de años de trabajo serio y profesional.
En la segunda mitad del año hemos tenido muchas pruebas de que el camino en que estamos es el correcto: un ejemplo es la participación record de público en los Campeonatos del Mundo de Hockey en Línea y Artístico, la distribución de la señal de televisión en los Campeonatos del Mundo de Velocidad a las televisiones y Federaciones Nacionales, la organización del Campeonato del Mundo de Hockey sobre Patines - Femenino y "B" , de Freestyle, Alpine Downhill , todos disfrutando de un éxito creciente y tención por parte de medios de comunicación y patrocinadores. Pero, sobre todo, este año estuvo marcado positivamente por la presencia del patinaje en el SportsLab en ocasión de los Juegos Olímpicos de la Juventud en Nanjing, la inclusión en los Juegos Mundiales Universitarios y el gran éxito de los Roller Games, para lo cuales fueron presentadas dos candidaturas importantes: Barcelona y Lima!
Ahora mismo os estoy escribiendo desde Nanjing, donde los Roller Sports realmente han marcado su huella: en Agosto nos alojamos durante 15 días bajo los ojos de los que mandan en el mundo olímpico – Miembros COI, medios de comunicación y patrocinadores - y por cierto todos ellos han llegado a apreciar las peculiaridades de nuestro deporte. Pero, sobre todo, han sido apreciados por miles de niños que a diario visitaron la pista y trataron de patinar con nuestros mejores atletas. Y con qué resultados! En Nanjing, el patinaje ahora se enseña en las escuelas, los niños y los adultos se juntan en las pistas para patinar y el gobierno de la ciudad está aprovechando esta ola de entusiasmo: Todos locos para las ruedas!
Entre los 4 deportes presentados en el SportsLab, el patinaje fue sin duda el más apreciado y esto llevó a las autoridades de Nanjing a contactar con la FIRS, primero para solicitar la organización de los Roller Games de 2017 presentando la candidatura pero lamentablemente fuera de tiempo, y luego firmando un acuerdo para la promoción y el desarrollo de los Roller Sports en el largo plazo: vamos a comenzar con una colaboración conjunta entre la ciudad de Nanjing, la FIRS y la Federación China para un enseñanza calificada del patinaje, para llegar luego a la celebración del Roller Day en la primavera de 2015 y a la presentación de importantes candidaturas para los Campeonatos del Mundo de Patinaje de Velocidad en 2016, de Hockey en Línea en 2018 y de los Roller Games en 2019. Soy orgulloso de decir que la FIRS es la única Federación, entre todas las presentes en Nanjing durante los Juegos Olímpicos Juveniles, con la que las autoridades han querido firmar un acuerdo de este tipo, reconociendo que, entre todos los deportes, nosotros somos los que realmente hemos atraído e impresionado a toda la ciudadanía.
A todo esto obviamente hay que añadir el hito importante de la integración en la Universiada de Taipéi 2017 como deporte de exhibición y en el programa oficial a partir de 2018: un hito esto en que hemos estado trabajando durante mucho tiempo y que estoy orgulloso de haber logrado junto con todos vosotros . Y finalmente, los Roller Games: antes de la fecha límite del 31 de octubre dos candidatos muy importantes, Lima y Barcelona, han confirmado el interés en el proyecto a nivel mundial.
Como se puede imaginar, el 2015 será un año de intenso trabajo, se iniciará en el Congreso en Roma, donde asignaremos los Roller Games, trabajaremos juntos en los nuevos cambios que ayudarán a seguir modernizando nuestra Federación y luego continuaremos con el proceso de licitación para los Campeonatos del Mundo, creados este año por primera vez y que nos permitirán garantizar organizaciones de un nivel aún más alto.
Y entonces, aunque ya hemos ganados nuestra Olimpiada, seguiremos trabajando juntos para alcanzar nuestro sueño Olímpico!
