WRG2017 Speed Skating: Amazing debut for the "new" Olympic discipline

Colombia won 5 gold medals at Speed Skating’s debut at World Roller Games. Finally speed skating has its debut after a day and a half of constant rain. The high media interest began to get pressured for this historic discipline that here will have a reliable test bench for the next goal with the first participation in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires 2018. Skaters were so thrilled to start their World Championships included in the 1st World Roller Games, and after 1 day and a half of waiting, the races kicked off today at 12:00 with the qualifications of the 500mt. Junior Ladies 10000 points/elimination


The Colombian duo Karen Bermudez and Daniela Mendoza, fight hard from the very first lap to catch some points but South Korea Lee Sujin could keep up their rhythm and win some points as well. Surprising Laura Lorenzato from Italy went on a solo breakaway, avoiding eliminations and winning a lot of points. Final results:


1 - Karen Bermudez Colombia 20pts
2 - Lee Sujin South Korea 14pts
3 - Laura Lorenzato Italy 12pts


Junior Men 10000 points/elimination


A really fast race for the Junior men with some incredibles turn of events. Very strong the two French Bastien Lhomme who helped Martin Ferrie taking a lot of points from the beginning. But an unlucky crush of Martin stopped his race. South Korean Jeong Byeonghee took advantage and gain a lot of points with a really strong performance ensuring his first place. Edoardo Quarona escaped from the group and with 4 laps away he could managed a silver place, third place for Bastien Lhomme.

Senior Ladies 15000 elimination


Francesca Lollobrigida dominated most of the race setting the pace and controlling her opponents. But in the last two laps Colombian duo Luz Karime Garzon and Jhoana Viveros work together to win the title. On the finish line Luz Karime took the win, followed by Francesca Lollobrigida and third Jhoana Viveros. After a claim for team fault, Lollobrigida was awarded with the gold medal. Second place for Colombia Luz Karime and third place for Sandrine Tas of Belgium. DSQ for Jhoana Viveros.


Senior Men 15000 elimination


Another race dominated by French and Colombians. They really skated a crazy pace on this race. But only the last 500mt determined who was the strongest between them. With an incredible sprint Alex Cujavante crossed the finish line raising his arms, second place for Alexis Contin from France and this place for Colombian Manuel Saavedra.



After the long distance races, the sprint races took the show.


Junior Ladies 500mt


Elvira Perez took the lead from the start and won gold for Colombia. Silver medal for Italy Giorgia Bormida and third place for Sarmiento Kerstink.


Junior Men 500mt


In the Junior men the final was composed by 2 Colombians and 2 French. Not an easy final and some faults occurred. In fact only gold and silver were awarded. First place for Steven Villegas, Colombia. Second Place for Flavien Foucher France. DSQ for Juan Pablo Arango and Valentin Thiebault.



Senior Ladies 500mt


Once again Colombia show the hegemony in sprint races especially in senior women. Anhlly Perez won the gold medal dominating from the first meters, second place for Korea with An Yiseul and third place for Laetishia Schimek who won the first medal for Germany.


Senior Men 500mt


A really strong Andres Felipe Munoz after more then 10 years at the apex of world competitions is still the man to beat. He controlled the race from the front letting no one pass him. But in the last lap a contact with Silvia Santibanez from Chile, costed him the gold medal. Final results:


1 - Lucas Silva Chile
2 - Andres Felipe Munoz Colombia
3 - Hong Seunggi South Korea
