With 4 countries bringing 8 teams across both men's and women’s divisions, day one of competition saw some fierce match-ups. The Australia vs China women’s teams opened the competition, taking to the track for the first ever match of World Skate Roller Derby to be hosted in this spectacular open air venue.
The matches have showcased an amazing array of athletes from across the globe. However, skaters quickly found out the track surface was unforgiving on their bodies as they were blocked to the ground. As the athletes adjusted to the new environment spirits remained high and there was an amazing level of camaraderie shown not just to teammates but also between competing teams the athletes have rallied, supporting each other through big falls, wins and losses.
The United States of America has taken a clear lead in the competition with both the Men’s and Women’s teams winning all their matches so far. Australia, India and China have brought fierce challenges but none yet have managed to defeat the reigning champion country.
The first day of competition saw the Women’s and Men’s teams from all countries play at least one match each before the schedule was delayed by the rain. The Women’s matches saw Australia defeat China and India. The USA replicated the feat, defeating India and China. The Men’s competition saw Australia defeat China and India, and the USA defeat India and China. Each match was a thrilling display of Roller Derby for the athletes, but even more so for the spectators.
The Women’s competition has been quickly been characterised by its strategy, control and energy. All teams have fielded fast and agile skaters who have been able to score points utilising teamwork and quick footwork. The Men’s competition has showcased incredible speed, strength and dexterity on skates, with blocks sending skaters in every direction as they fought for points.
Despite the weather delays on the first day of competition, the skaters from all teams have played their way back on schedule with some teams playing three matches in a day. Each team has grown as the competition continues, as has the intensity of the match-ups.
Despite the occasional experience differences, the quality of gameplay on display in Montesilvano has been exceptional, with each team giving the spectators moments worthy of committing to memory.
The depth of talent in each team has been obvious from the first whistle, as has the sportsmanship. Each team has helped uplift the others, and the intensity of the games has lifted with it. Each team has given their all so far, and the competition has been fierce on the track. The universal thread of roller derby has brought the athletes together in camaraderie and support. The winning teams will walk away with a gold medal and new friends from all across the globe.
