It's women time at the World Roller Games. Tomorrow the best 8 teams will play in the quarter finals, looking for the medal zone. Today was an interesting preview: what about the Czechs late comeback versus France? A 2-1 thrilling win that assured the first place to the eastern european girls. And Canada? Well, the defending champion are here to stay but it wasn't so easy against Italy (3-1). Spain – Usa was another battle: europeans won 1-0 to clinch the first place in Pool B. Men's program is at the same point, with the quarter finals scheduled on Thursday. Tomorrow is the last chance to get a playoff spot for two teams. The other six are waiting. China gets the headlines today thanks to his very first win in the World Championsips (9-2 versus Korea).
Today's games decided the ranking:
Usa was desperate versus the Czechs: they needed to win but their start was terrible. The Czechs went ahead 7-2 controlling the game easily. Then the Americans reacted with pride but lost 8-5: “It was too late – said Jonathan Mosenson, U.S. Captain – this tournament went bad for us. We had little time to practice together and couldn't find the chemistry. For me this is the last Firs World Championship. I had a couple of injuries and I feel I can't play no more at the level I want. It's time for the new generation. I had a lot of great memories: in gold medal time but even in the downfalls there's always something you learn”.
Czech first, Canada second. No problem versus the Latvians. It's 8-1 without discussion. Dave Hammond, Canada's captain said: “We wanted to keep the goal against down to be sure to get the second spot. It was a tough Pool, like in the World Games but we're growing game after game. And the Czechs aren't unbeatable”.
In Pool B it was the same old story between France and Italy: tough game, battles along the boards, and close result till the end. French side opened the score on powerplay with a wrist shot by Rage at 4.53. They took the puck almost all the time, but Italians were able to score on the first chance: slap by Munari, deflected in net by Tombolato. With just 3 seconds left in the first period, Lapresa scored for France, on a rebound. No scoring in the second period : “We control the game – said Goeffroy Tijou, France coaching staff – but didn't shoot a lot. We won the Pool but definitely cannot relax: Spain is on our way”.
Same result (2-1) in the other Pool B contest between Switzerland and Argentina. It's playoff for the Swiss. Relegation for the South Americans who played strong on defense but with lack of scoring touch. Swiss coach Michael Frieli commented: “We changed something to adjust defense. It worked. And the goalie did a good job. Now we have a chance on the next level, a great opportunity for our young players”.
