Milan becomes global stage for the Inline Freestyle World Cup

The Inline Freestyle World Cup - Milan - Hero Battle Cup 2026 officially kicks off today in Piazza Duca d’Aosta. Running until July 4, this major international event brings the world's top inline skating talent to the vibrant area surrounding Milan Central Station.

Now in its 18th edition, the event marks a historic milestone for the discipline. The Milan leg serves as the Opening Stage of the official World Skate World Cup circuit, offering 325 crucial points for the world ranking.
A major highlight of this year’s technical calendar is the Freestyle Mashup, debuting on July 2 from 18:00 to 23:00. Introduced by the international federation (World Skate) as a test event, this innovative format blends inline figure skating, the quick reflexes of freestyle, and contemporary dance across two variants: Acrobatic and Dance.

Over 500 athletes from more than 25 nations are ready to compete at the highest technical level. The competition schedule ranges from the explosive speed of Speed Slalom, where precision timing is everything, to the creative artistry of Classic Slalom and Battle, true tests of style and musical interpretation. The lineup also features Pairs, testing synchronization and team chemistry, alongside the high-flying spectacles of Free Jump and Slide, where physical power and braking technique determine who makes the podium.

.Another technical revolution this year is the debut of the PRO Category. This new competitive format merges the former Senior and Junior divisions into a single elite tier for athletes aged 15 and over, setting up direct showdowns between seasoned veterans and rising stars. The next generation will also have its moment to shine on the international stage in the Junior Under 15 category.

"Today marks the launch of an exciting new format for inline freestyle, and we are thrilled to host the opening stage of the World Cup," said Alessandro Cola, Event Organizer. "World Skate’s decision to kick off the circuit here shines a spotlight on Milan as the ultimate hub for modern freestyle. There is massive buzz around this edition, which will make history with the introduction of the PRO Category. By removing the barrier between juniors and seniors, the world's elite athletes will compete directly against each other for the absolute title."

The event is entirely free and open to the public, making it highly accessible for families and sports enthusiasts alike. By combining elite sports with sustainability, public space revitalization, and social inclusion, the tournament further boosts Milan's appeal as a premier tourist destination.

Local and regional authorities have pledged their full support to the initiative.

Federica Picchi, Undersecretary for Sport and Youth for the Lombardy Region, stated: "The Hero Battle Cup 2026 is a flagship stop on the Inline Freestyle World Cup circuit. Alongside Madrid, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Shanghai, Milan is one of only three European hosts, significantly elevating Lombardy’s international profile. The Lombardy Region proudly supports this event through our dedicated grants. The estimated economic impact exceeds €10.5 million, delivering widespread benefits across local hospitality, commerce, and sports promotion. It also serves, once again, as a driver for youth development: even though it is 'freestyle', skating is a sport with its own rules to respect."

Martina Riva, Councilor for Sport, Tourism, and Youth Policies for the Municipality of Milan, emphasized the local impact: "Milan continues to invest in sports that speak the language of the younger generation and transform public spaces into vibrant hubs of talent and community. By bringing the World Cup back to Piazza Duca d'Aosta, we are fulfilling the City's commitment to injecting positive energy into what serves as Milan's gateway for train travelers. For five days, our city will welcome hundreds of international athletes, offering residents and visitors a spectacular, free show while reinforcing Milan’s standing as a global capital for major sporting events."

The city’s cultural and economic fabric is actively participating in the event. Eleonora Manto, Marketing Director at NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, explained: "For NABA, being the Educational Partner of the Hero Battle Cup means supporting a vision and a set of values where sport, creativity, culture, and local identity become opportunities for growth, dialogue, and exchange, especially for the younger generations. Thanks to the involvement of the Academy's BA in Scenography in the upcoming workshops, we will bring an educational experience into the event, stimulating creative and design-focused dialogue around sport. We are proud to participate in one of the most important events of the national urban sports season, which brings one of Milan's most iconic locations to life, highlighting the city's ability to welcome youth and diverse languages with vibrant energy."

Alessandro Tavallini, Chief Media Officer at Grandi Stazioni Retail, stated: "Milan Central Station is much more than a transit hub: it is a destination in itself, the gateway to the city that welcomes hundreds of thousands of people every day. Grandi Stazioni Retail continues to invest in enhancing these extraordinary spaces, transforming them into vibrant environments capable of offering high-quality experiences to both travelers and citizens. Hosting the Inline Freestyle World Cup in Piazza Duca d'Aosta once again this year, following the great success of the last edition, confirms this vision: the station as a stage for culture, sport, and urban innovation."

Chiara Angeletti, Marketing Manager at CX Campus & Hotel, which manages hospitality for staff and athletes, added: "For the second year in a row, we are alongside the Hero Battle Cup, a project that transforms urban spaces into meeting places for expression and growth, creating authentic connections and an international community through sport. We believe that initiatives like this contribute to building more open, dynamic, and inclusive cities - a vision that we share and support with great enthusiasm."

Sabatino Aracu, President of both the Italian Roller Sports Federation (FISR) and World Skate, concluded: “Our sports are experiencing incredible global success, thanks to their youthful, urban attitude and focus on sustainability. Roller disciplines engage in a perfect dialogue with cities, bringing to life events that are true urban festivals dedicated to the new generations and to sport. Clear proof of this is the Hero Battle Cup 2026, making its stop in Milan for the third consecutive year. This is a massive event dedicated to Inline Freestyle, a specialty that has seen growing momentum in recent years both in Italy and internationally, and one that continues to bring us immense satisfaction on the Italian national team level. My compliments go to the organizing club, ASD Conero Roller. The numbers speak volumes about the excellent work done: over 500 athletes from 25 nations will compete for medals in an event that, once again this year, will draw thousands of spectators, enthusiasts, and curious newcomers. Roller disciplines possess unique, winning traits and boast an impressive social media following, particularly among Gen Z. From a communication standpoint, the contemporary world moves at an impressive speed. With our sports, and therefore with Inline Freestyle, we are keeping pace with the times. Events like this 2026 World Cup in Milan succeed in engaging more and more young people, who are our future. Have a great Hero Battle Cup, everyone!"
