Yesterday, September 14th, 2024, at the Spot Skatepark in Ostia, Rome, the best roller freestyle athletes in the world gathered to compete for the Park World Championship titles.
In the Junior Women's Final, there were 3 South Americans, 2 Japanese, and 3 Europeans, including Anelim Stet, the only Italian competing in the Roller Freestyle Park finals. The Italian skater received a lot of support from the public and ended up finishing in 5th position. The Brazilians Nicolly Ribas and Rafaela Reis were able to land some flip and spin tricks but could not match the flow of Lilou Fumery and Leonor Toy. Leonor had a lot of support from the crowd and landed a clean first run, but no one was able to beat the new Roller Freestyle Park World Champion, Lilou Fumery. With a clean line and a big bag of tricks, Lilou took first place.
In the Junior Men's Final, Alex Fernandez completely dominated the competition. His run was filled with technical airs, spins, flips, and grinds, which put him almost 10 points ahead of the battle for 2nd place. The French skater Élio Sala-Naessens and the Japanese skater Takumi Yamamoto had a close fight for second, but Élio’s lines and consistency ended up securing him the silver medal.
With daylight starting to go down, the Women's Finals began and were completely dominated by Brazilian skaters Ana Julia and Nicolly Machado, who finished in 2nd and 1st place with two very different styles of skating. Nicolly skated fast across the park with amazing flow, super clean grinds, carves, and spins, and her second run ended up being her victory lap. Third place went to Japan's Mei Myoga, who skated really well but struggled to put together a completely clean line.
The Men's Final was the most awaited event, and it did not disappoint. Throughout the whole week, the French team had been on top of their game, from the clean lines with technical grinds and boosted airs by legends Anthony Avella and Nicola Servy, to the new-school park approach of Leo Fumery, not forgetting the previous World Cup Games Roller Freestyle Park winner, Julien Cudot.
Leo ended up pulling off a switch flatspin transfer and a double kangaroo over the spine, earning him 2nd place, just ahead of the flying Dutchman, Jaro Frijn, who skated the fastest around the bowl but couldn’t bring the technicality the judges were looking for to secure the win.
The gold was taken by Julien Cudot, who landed a clean first run filled with tricks not seen before this final, such as a backflip 540 transfer and a fakie backflip. Julien already knew he was the winner before his second run, but his victory lap ended up being even cleaner than the first one.
For the first time, we have a returning Roller Freestyle Park World Champion, and he’s already training on the street circuit. Can Julien Cudot also take the gold in Street?
