Today's do-or-die games were full of emotions. Colombians were down 1-0 till minute 36.11. Then they shocked the Sweds in less than a minute with the equalizer, scored by Burgos Ochoa and the game winner by Gonzalez. Meanwhile at the Rink 2 Japan was dreaming his first ever quarter final qualification. They were up 2-1 after 20 minutes versus Spain. With 3 goals in a row in the second period the spanish came back and were able to control the final minutes (final score 4-3).
SENIOR WOMEN
Czechs girls go to semifinal. Not an easy one for them: a 3-1, and the last goal was on empy net. Italian defensive box worked properly almost all the time. Czechs found a hole just one time in the first period (on rebound) and scored the game winning goal on power play with three minutes left on the clock. Bisi scored for Italy. “Our opponents played with heart – said Czechs coach Pancak – to be honest, before the game, we tought to win easier. Anyway, we capitalized on the right moment of the game with the man advantage”.
Second quarter final, Usa – France, was a no contest one. Americans played the perfect game to win 5-0. No goals down, special teams worked fine. Coach Marmostein is satisfied: “Everything worked very well today. France played very hard. They are a physical and fast team but we were able to control the puck. Our goalie played outstanding. The girls didn't feel any pressure at all”.
Same result for the third quarter final: the spanish girls beat 5-0 Australia playing with patience against a box-style defensive system. Spain scored on power play to opened and got the second before the break. Too much for Australia: “We needed more plays – said Australian alternate captain Danielle Roberts – but overall I think we played good. We tried our best but with these great teams it's not enough. Anyway we're in the top 8, we stand with our heads up high”.
Last match of the day between Canada and New Zealand was an unexpected battle. The “Kiwis” played with great team spirit and discipline. Canada scored first, but New Zealand equalized in the first period. A glove side snapshot by Alyssa Baldin put the maple leaves ahead. A great shot by Grigg closed the score. Canada's captain Laloya Clarke said: “Every game in this tournament was hard, the level is growing. It's better for the game and for the viewers. I think everyone in the stands enjoyed our battle versus New Zealand. And now U.S.A.: it's always a special one”.
