Over seven thousand people at the Grand Prix of Florence

The challenge of bringing the great skating at the Mandela Forum in Florence after seven years of absence has been a mission accomplished with a result and a success beyond all expectations.

It was not easy to reconnect with fans and townspeople the synergy born with the successful experience of the 2001 World Championships: it was a difficult comparison, but the format of the World Roller Skating Grand Prix, the spirit of innovation with which the Skate Power Group has developed the project wanted by the International Federation, the many side initiatives organized, have restored a relationship of full cooperation with the municipal administration.

The Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Sports of Florence Dario Nardella, who was judge in the final day together with other people not belonging to the skating world, confirms satisfied: "Florence has once again demonstrated a great feeling with one of the most spectacular disciplines, and this can not but rejoice us, because we have invested as Administration economical resources in important facilities dedicated to roller skating with the construction of two covered arenas. Our commitment is now to bring back annually to the city of Florence the World Roller Skating Grand Prix, that in those two days has thrilled the audience thanks to a remarkable effort of the organization and the organizers whom we thank very much. I hope that soon the figure skating - a sport in which we are at the first place in the world - may finally come to join the Olympic program."

The success of the Grand Prix in Florence is to find not only in the enthusiastic participation of over 7000 people for the main event, but also in the quality of the stages, which took place on the rinks of Novoli and Oltrarno, in the meeting of the judges, who attended the rehearsals of the show, in the very interesting meeting for coaches held by Sara Locandro, that at some point had to be stopped, as the hall which hosted the meeting was packed to excess. For these initiatives, the cooperation offered by FIHP Tuscany Regional Committee chaired by Mario Tinghi with the essential support of Piero Mori has proved valuable. The Tuscan skating world responded compact and with vision, because it is clear that the promotional impact of this great event will benefit the clubs operating in the area. Figure skating in Florence and throughout Tuscany has never enjoyed such visibility as in the period leading up to the Grand Prix: constant presence of press, billboards, even in large sizes, promotions in shopping malls.

In the shows, beyond competition, took a prominent part the choreographies of all the Champions participating at the Grand Prix ,with a large selection of athletes skating in Florence. One of the most significant moment, although of course there was not the claim of a high-level singing performance, was the live performance of the Grand Prix hymn "Let the artistic roll up to you" and exposure of the FIRS mega flag.

The juries were coordinated by the Cepa President Margaret Brooks and by the Cipa member Nicola Genchi and it was great to find all together so many champions, who have written the history of Italian figure skating, many of which protagonists always at the Mandela Forum World Championships 2001. Great contribution at the two evenings was given by Sofia Bruscoli, a former athlete in the speciality of the dance and now a successful television personality (last years sha has conducted "Domenica In" with Pippo Baudo) and Andrea Vasumi, comic of Zelig.
